Arts Views is a monthly e-newsletter from the Medina County Arts Council to promote our mission to advocate for, support, and nurture the arts in Medina County.

“Nancy was active in community groups, helping to found the Medina County Arts Council, a local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Medina County Arts Foundation, and the Brunswick Alumni Community Theatre. She served on the boards and held various offices in the Medina County Arts Council, AAUW, the Magical Theatre Company, the Ohio Educational Theatre Association, the International Educational Theatre Association, the Ohio Theatre Alliance, the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, the Ohio Speech Communication Association, the Ohio High School Speech League, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She taught English, speech, debate, and drama at Brunswick High School for 27 years, where she directed plays, established a Thespian Troupe, led the Debate and Forensic Teams, and was English Department Coordinator. She also worked with the Brunswick Recreation Center as a Children's Creative Dramatics Instructor and was administrator of the Columbus Junior Theatre of the Arts.

Nancy was awarded many honors including Brunswick Teacher of the Year, Brunswick City Schools Outstanding Staff Hall of Fame, Ohio Speech Teacher of the Year, the Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Medina County Arts Council, the Medina Branch of American Association of University Women Award of Achievement, the Medina County Historical Society Northrop Award, the West Liberty University Alumni Wall of Fame, the Ohio High School Speech League Hall of Fame, and the National Educational Theatre Association Hall of Fame.” ~ obituary of Nancy Sprowls

The family has set up the Nancy Sprowls Memorial Fund of the Medina County Arts Council to provide grant funds for arts education projects in the county.

Take the Tour …

Take your family and friends on a driving tour of the 24 “Deck The House Challenge” homes! A list of participants and their addresses can be found on the Medina County Arts Council website – medinacountyartscouncil.org.

The community will have until December 18 to tour the county and view the displays, then vote for their favorite. There’s no cost to participate. The winner will receive the coveted “Deck the House” trophy and $100 in gift cards from local businesses. Watch the Live Event the week of Dec. 19 on Facebook.

So throw the jammies on the kids, grab their blankies and snacks, and pack into the car to tour the county in search of the best holiday lighting display. Then go to www.medinacountyartscouncil.org to vote for your favorite.

Local artists, arts entrepreneurs, arts organizations, and arts educators in Medina County - Please join us for the Arts Roundtable as we continue the discussion on the state of “the arts” in Medina County, what is needed from MCAC, how we can better fulfill those needs, as well as identify opportunities and ways to work together.

• March 2 - grant writing – Akron Community Foundation

• June 1 - Ohio Arts Council; what they do & how to take advantage of their programs

• September 7 -marketing/advertising/social media

• November 2 - financial planning, and tax help.

Educator Grant Awardees

The Medina County Arts Council Board of Trustees is pleased to award four educators grants this year totaling $1,600 to support arts-related projects for their students. Here are the teachers and locations awarded:

Theresa Gorbach (Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Wadsworth) - $400
Kristy Handlin (Cloverleaf Elementary School) - $400
Andrea Risenhoover (Blake Elementary School, Medina) - $400
Samantha Quallich (Wadsworth Middle School) - $400

MCAC Scholarship Program

The MCAC Student Scholarship application period benefiting Medina County High School graduating Seniors will be open in January. Please be sure to follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram and continue to receive the MCAC ArtsViews newsletter for important dates and information.

If you know of a senior in Medina County that will be graduating in 2023 and has plans to pursue an arts-related career after graduation, please share the MCAC Scholarship Program with them.
